Climate change - an urgent industry challenge

At the 2021 world climate conference held in Glasgow, UK, representatives of the textile industry proposed a more ambitious version of the climate action charter for fashion industry. In the updated charter, more than 130 participating companies have pledged to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, one of the goals of the Paris climate agreement. At the same time, the textile industry has set a target of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. There is great room for improvement in carbon and water intensive manufacturing processes in the textile industry. However, in order to achieve large-scale changes, besides voluntary initiatives, joint action by the whole industry is urgently needed.

   OEKO-TEX ® Support action
In order to achieve the 2030 target of the industry, major enterprises need to obtain reliable data. For this purpose, Oeko-Tex ® Release environmental impact assessment tools to promote global supply chain related improvement and data exchange. The tool measures the carbon and water footprints of each process, the entire process and per kilogram of material / product.
"Transparency is a decisive factor in measuring and reducing greenhouse gas and water emissions from the supply chain," said Mr. Georg dieners, secretary general. "For 30 years, Oeko-Tex ® We always adhere to our own guiding principles and promise to provide enterprises and consumers with feasible solutions to meet the challenges of the industry. OEKO-TEX ® We will continue to develop scientific solutions and digital systems for our customers to help manage the environmental and social impacts of the process. The introduction of carbon dioxide and water emission standards is a pragmatic move to further improve transparency. "
   Life cycle assessment solutions
OEKO-TEX ® Aware of the need for action, a life cycle assessment tool has been developed since 2020. Today, stip by Oeko-Tex ® Plant certification has integrated carbon footprint and water footprint calculations. In this way, the certification can help factories:
The maximum carbon and water impacts are determined based on the materials used or produced and the production processes involved.
Take corresponding measures to improve operation and achieve emission reduction targets.
Share carbon and water footprint data with customers, investors, business partners and other stakeholders.
Step certification is made in green by Oeko-Tex ® Prerequisites for product labeling. The implementation of footprint calculation tools aims to enhance consumer communication and transparency.
Brand new certification for brands and retailers: responsive business by Oeko-Tex ®

OEKO-TEX ® The goal is to fully support enterprises in fulfilling their due diligence obligations related to their operations and global supply chain. Although home textiles continue to dominate the strongest categories (bedding has increased by 80% compared with the previous year), the growth momentum of clothing category is particularly prominent. The largest increase was in work clothes and protective clothing, up 156% over the previous year. It can be seen that the demand for sustainable manufacturing products in all fields of textile products is growing rapidly.
Change of limit value of restricted substances
OEKO-TEX ® In standard 100, leader standard and eco password by Oeko-Tex ® Added in certification
The requirement of the limit value of bisphenol B (BPb) was introduced into stip by Oeko-Tex ® Mrsl list. New requirements for the limit value of Michaelis ketone / Michaelis base colorants were added.
   New monitored substances
Oeko-Tex, 2022 ® The monitoring of substances will continue to be based on the latest scientific findings and compliance with relevant specifications. Some process preservatives, such as bisphenol F, bisphenol s and bisphenol AF, are mainly involved.
