The leaders of the participating countries reaffirmed that Asian and European countries should strengthen strategic dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the permanent president of the European Council, van Rompuy, said that the summit set up a channel for communication between the two continents of Asia and Europe and promoted exchanges between the two sides.

"After two days of meetings, we are encouraged by the willingness of Europe and Asia to work together," he said.

At this summit, Asian and European leaders focused on global economic governance and financial reform, sustainable development and global and regional hotspot issues.

The meeting's presidential statement said that with the implementation of the economic stimulus plan and the sustained recovery of the global economy, the most urgent problem now should be to restore market confidence and maintain the momentum of economic recovery.

Asian and European leaders believe that reforms should be carried out in the field of international financial regulation, and support the implementation of the IMF share reform at the summit of the group of 20 in Seoul, Korea, held in November to fully reflect the components of IMF members in the global economy.

The statement said that the share of IMF must be pferred to emerging markets and developing countries, and that those with too much representation should pfer at least 5% of their share to the less represented members.

The leaders of the conference believe that on the issue of climate change, all countries should push forward negotiations within the framework of the United Nations Convention on climate change. In accordance with the authorization of the "Bali Island road map", a "fair, effective, comprehensive and legally binding" agreement should be reached as soon as possible.

In addition, the leaders discussed international issues such as combating piracy, international terrorism, UN reform, nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, as well as regional issues such as Afghanistan, Palestine Israel peace talks, the Iran nuclear issue and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The summit decided that the ninth Asia Europe summit will be held in Vientiane, Laos capital, on October 2012.

ASEM was established in 1996 as a forum for intergovernmental dialogue between Asia and Europe.

The ASEM summit is the highest level meeting of the ASEM, which is held every two years.

This Asia Europe summit has attracted new members from Russia, Australia and New Zealand, thus increasing the number of ASEM members to 48.

Among them, European members include the 27 European Union, Russia and the European Commission, and Asian members include 18 Asia Pacific countries and ASEAN Secretariat.
