Companies that own jeans such as Levi Strauss and Wrangler are witnessing big fluctuations in the cost of denim fabrics, which may push up prices for jeans, jackets and other garments.

Industry executives say that traditionally, the price of cloth supplied to denim producers by traditional denim factories is fixed between the cotton harvest seasons of the year, but now they are starting to raise prices, sometimes by week or even day by day.

PCCA Jack, the vice president of fabric sales, described the current price volatility as "the craziest thing I've ever worked in" since. PCCA exports cloth to Latin American factories in the denim factory in Dezhou, United States.

In the past year, cotton prices in the ICEFuturesUS of the continental exchange rose 33% to 15 year highs, mainly because the economic recovery encouraged consumers to boldly shop and the emerging economies grew rapidly. The US Department of agriculture forecast this week that the world's cotton consumption will increase by 2.8% in August 1st, and the warehouse will be emptied.

Gary Rains Raines, an economist at FCStone, a futures brokerage firm, said: "demand will exceed production in third consecutive years". (Gary)

Rains said that in the first 3 months of 2010, imports of American jeans grew by 12.8% over the same period last year, and the average cost of landing this year is about 3.2%.

VFCorp, which owns Wrangler and Lee brand, has recently said that the price of fabric, which is mainly made of cotton, will drive up the cost of jeans production at the end of this year and next year.

A spokesman for Levi Strauss said that in view of the many variables involved, "it is too early to speculate on the long-term impact of the current cotton price trend".
